Odessa was officially founded in 1794 as a Russian naval fortress. According to one of the legends Duke Emmanuel de Richelieu decided to build the new city that would be even more beautiful than Paris.
Today Odessa is a city of 1.1 million people. Odessa is situated on terraced hills overlooking a small harbor. The weather is mild and dry with average temperatures in January of -2 C (29 F), and July of 22 C (73 F). Odessa is well-known as the capital of humor, probably due to the great variety of people and its southern location on the Black Sea.
Odessa's classical architecture is set on orderly planned streets that are surrounded with green space, giving the city an air of elegance.

The city is ideally located and has an excellent climate. There are practically no north winds. The winters are extremely mild (roses often bloom in the open at Christmas) and the city is rich in acacia, laurel, magnolia, and palm trees, and is surrounded by orchards and vineyards. The mountains are covered with oak and beech forests. The heat of the summer months is tempered by the sea breezes. The annual sunshine hours equal those of Nice in the south of France. The bathing season lasts from June till the end of September.
