TRANSCARPATHIA Transcarpathia (Zakarpatska oblast) is the most southwestern province in Ukraine bordering with Poland in the North, Slovakia in the West, Hungary in the south-west and Romania in the south. The region occupies the southwestern part of the Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains and the neighboring northeastern part of Central Danube Lowland.The territory is mountainous and hilly and is covered with deciduous and coniferous forests, and alpine meadows. The highest point in the region is mount Goverla (2061 m) in the Carpathians. In the lowlands are fertile fields, orchards and vineyards. The climate is temperate-continental with a comparatively long spring, mild summer, warm fall, and cool winter. Due to its warm climate, numerous mineral water springs, picturesque mountains and valleys, specific cuisine, famous local wine Transcarpathia is very popular in Ukraine. UZHGOROD
Architecture of the city detaches it from other cities of Ukraine. Among Uzhgorod's fine churches there are the candy-coloured Russian Orthodox church and the impressive twin-towered 17th century Cathedral up on the castle hill. Small squares with mosaic paved sidewalks, cornices, balconies, lines, colour of the walls creat the uniqueness and attractiveness of Uzhgorod's architectural ensembles of small streets and whole blocks. Old center of Uzhgorod has approximately ten architectural styles. A lot of buildings were built eclectically. Due to a distinctive atmosphere of Uzhgorod, roaming its streets, trying various dishes of Hungarian, Slovak and local cuisine, drinking perfect Uzhgorod coffee (espresso) is a pleasant experience. is a city on the Latorytsya river, 72 km from Uzhhorod. Population is
19,800. First written mentions refer to 12th century. Until 1264 the city
was part of the Galician-Volynian Principality. Later, it belonged to
numerous Hungarian feudal lords. The noble family of Count Shenborn-Buchheim
ruled the city for two centuries.
Today Svalyava is a spa area, with approximately 100 mineral springs, approximately one-third of the total number of springs in Transcarpathia. Many sanatoriums are located in the area. Such mineral waters as Polyana Kvasova and Luzhanska, produced in Svalyava, are well-known world around. The sanatorium offers comfortable single and double rooms with bathrooms and modern furnishing, refrigerators, radiators, telephones and TV sets. There is club hall, dining room, medical department, swimming-pool, and sauna in the sanatorium. |
